AI Model Validation and Testing

An AI model should not be trusted simply because it produces convincing results during development. Before it is used to support employees, customers, business decisions, or automated processes, its performance needs to be tested independently and under realistic conditions.

AI Model Validation and Testing helps you establish whether a model is accurate, reliable, secure, and suitable for its intended purpose. At CA, we examine not only how well the model performs, but also where it may fail, how those failures could affect the organisation, and what safeguards are needed.

Our role is to give you a clear and evidence-based understanding of the model’s capabilities and limitations before it is approved for operational use.

Why This Matters

AI models can produce results that appear reliable even when they are based on incomplete data, incorrect assumptions, or patterns that do not reflect real business conditions.
A model may perform well with the information used during development but struggle when it encounters new customers, unusual transactions, changing market conditions, or unfamiliar document types. Generative AI solutions may provide inaccurate or misleading answers in a confident and convincing way.
If these weaknesses are not identified during testing, employees or automated processes may rely on outputs that are incomplete, inappropriate, or incorrect.
AI Model Validation and Testing helps you:

🎯

Confirm that the model is fit for purpose

Establish whether the model performs well enough to support its intended users, decisions, processes, and business outcomes.

📊

Understand limitations and failure scenarios

Identify the conditions in which the model may produce inaccurate, inconsistent, misleading, or unexpected results.

🛡️

Protect users and business processes

Introduce appropriate controls, warnings, approval stages, and human review where incorrect outputs could have significant consequences.

🤝

Support informed approval decisions

Give business and technology leaders clear evidence for deciding whether a model is ready for deployment, requires improvement, or should not be used.

Our Approach

We adapt the validation process to the model’s intended purpose, complexity, and level of risk. A model supporting a critical business decision requires more extensive testing than a low-risk internal tool.
Our assessments are designed to provide a realistic view of how the model is likely to behave in practice, not only under ideal test conditions.

1

Define the validation criteria

We begin by understanding the model’s purpose, intended users, expected outputs, and role within the wider business process.
Together with the relevant stakeholders, we define measurable acceptance criteria. These may include accuracy, consistency, response time, reliability, explainability, security, and the frequency of incorrect or incomplete results.
We also consider the possible consequences of an error. This allows the level of testing and required safeguards to reflect the importance and risk of the model.

2

Review the model, data, and development process

We examine the information used to develop and test the model, including its quality, relevance, completeness, and suitability for the intended purpose.
We consider whether the test data reflects realistic operating conditions and whether important scenarios or categories have been overlooked. We also review the model’s assumptions, design decisions, documented limitations, and development controls.
Where appropriate, we assess whether access permissions, data protection requirements, intellectual property, and security considerations have been addressed adequately.

3

Test performance and resilience

We test the model using data and scenarios that were not used during its development.
The tests examine whether results are accurate, consistent, and useful under normal operating conditions. We also assess how the model responds to incomplete information, unusual inputs, unexpected user behaviour, changing data, and attempts to use the solution outside its intended purpose.
For generative AI solutions, testing may also consider factual reliability, the handling of sensitive information, the quality of referenced sources, and the model’s response when it does not have sufficient information.
The results provide a clearer picture of both expected performance and possible failure scenarios.

4

Report findings and support remediation

We present the validation findings in clear language for both business and technology stakeholders.
The report explains what was tested, how the model performed, which limitations were identified, and whether the agreed acceptance criteria were met. Where weaknesses are found, we recommend realistic actions such as improving the data, adjusting the model, strengthening access controls, introducing additional user guidance, or adding human approval.
Following remediation, we can perform further testing to establish whether the identified issues have been addressed before the model moves into operational use.

What Sets CA Apart

💬

Independent assessment

We provide an objective view of the model’s performance, limitations, and readiness for operational use.

🛡️

Risk-based testing

The depth of testing reflects the model’s purpose, complexity, users, and potential impact on the organisation.

🤝

Realistic test scenarios

We examine how the model behaves under normal, unusual, and challenging conditions rather than relying only on ideal examples.

⚖️

Clear and practical findings

We explain technical results in accessible business language and provide recommendations that can be acted on.

The Business Value

AI Model Validation and Testing with CA gives you greater confidence that an AI solution is suitable for its intended purpose before it becomes part of daily operations.
It helps identify performance weaknesses, unreliable outputs, data problems, and security concerns before they affect employees, customers, or important decisions. It also provides clear evidence for approval, strengthens accountability, and supports responsible AI governance.
Most importantly, validation helps prevent confidence in an AI model from exceeding its actual capabilities. Your organisation can make deployment decisions based on evidence rather than assumptions.

Next Step

AI models should earn trust through evidence, not appearances.
