Cloud and Container Vulnerability Assessment

Cloud platforms and containers allow organisations to introduce services quickly, scale resources when demand changes, and automate large parts of their technology environment. The same speed and flexibility can also make security more difficult to control.

A storage service may be created with excessive access, a container image may include vulnerable software, or a temporary cloud resource may remain active after a project has ended. Small configuration decisions can create serious exposure when they affect sensitive data, public services, or privileged identities.

A Cloud and Container Vulnerability Assessment from CA helps you identify weaknesses across cloud infrastructure, workloads, container images, orchestration platforms, and their supporting processes. We combine technical assessment with business context to show where genuine risk exists and which improvements should be addressed first.

Why This Matters

Cloud and container environments change continuously. Resources can be created automatically, applications may be updated several times a day, and responsibility is often shared between development, operations, security teams, and cloud providers.
Traditional vulnerability scanning does not always provide a complete picture. A workload may use current software but still be exposed through excessive permissions, publicly accessible storage, insecure network rules, embedded credentials, or an incorrectly configured cloud service.
A structured cloud and container vulnerability assessment helps you:

🎯

Identify vulnerable workloads

Find outdated packages, insecure container images, unsupported components, and known vulnerabilities across cloud-hosted systems.

📊

Detect configuration weaknesses

Recognise publicly exposed resources, excessive permissions, weak network controls, missing encryption, and incomplete security settings.

🛡️

Protect sensitive information

Understand where important data is stored, how it is accessed, and whether cloud or container configurations could expose it.

🤝

Reduce risk before deployment

Identify weaknesses in images, templates, and deployment configurations before they reach the production environment.

Our Approach

We do not assess cloud and container security by examining individual vulnerabilities in isolation. Effective protection depends on how identities, workloads, networks, data, configurations, images, and deployment processes work together.
Our approach covers both the running environment and the development process that creates it. We examine technical weaknesses, security configuration, access, exposure, and operational responsibilities to understand how an issue could affect the wider organisation.
The assessment is adapted to your cloud platforms, container technologies, business services, and current level of operational maturity.

1

Understand the environment and define the scope

We begin by understanding which cloud platforms, accounts, subscriptions, workloads, clusters, registries, and development processes should be included.
We identify critical services, sensitive information, internet-facing resources, privileged identities, third-party connections, and applications that require particular attention. We also review how cloud and container resources are created, approved, updated, and removed.
Available architecture diagrams, asset information, cloud policies, configuration standards, and previous assessment results are examined to establish the current position.
This provides a clear testing scope and helps us focus on the parts of the environment where a weakness could have the greatest business impact.

2

Assess cloud configurations and access

We review the security configuration of relevant cloud services and supporting controls.
The assessment may cover identity and access management, privileged roles, network rules, public exposure, encryption, storage permissions, logging, monitoring, backup arrangements, secrets management, and security settings applied to individual services.
We look for excessive permissions, unused accounts, unrestricted network access, publicly available data, disabled logging, weak authentication, and differences between actual settings and internal standards.
We also consider how separate weaknesses could be combined. A single configuration issue may appear minor but become more serious when it exists alongside a powerful identity, exposed management interface, or poorly protected data source.

3

Examine container images and running workloads

We assess container images, registries, orchestrated environments, and running workloads for technical and configuration weaknesses.
Testing may identify vulnerable operating-system packages, outdated application libraries, unnecessary components, embedded credentials, insecure base images, excessive container privileges, unsafe network exposure, or insufficient separation between workloads.
We also review how images are built, approved, stored, and updated. This helps determine whether known weaknesses can be introduced repeatedly through automated deployment processes.
Where appropriate, we compare the security of the build environment with the running environment. This provides greater visibility into weaknesses introduced during development as well as changes made after deployment.

4

Prioritise remediation and strengthen the deployment process

We document confirmed findings and prioritise them according to exploitability, exposure, workload importance, data sensitivity, existing controls, and potential business impact.
Recommendations may include updating vulnerable components, replacing insecure images, limiting permissions, changing network rules, protecting secrets, enabling logging, applying encryption, or removing unused resources.
We also identify opportunities to prevent similar weaknesses from returning. These may include security checks within development pipelines, approved base images, configuration templates, automated policy controls, clearer ownership, and regular reviews of cloud resources.
Where required, CA can perform follow-up testing to confirm that corrective actions have been implemented successfully.

What Sets CA Apart

💬

Cloud and containers assessed together

We consider the relationships between cloud services, identities, networks, images, clusters, applications, and data.

🛡️

Risk assessed in context

We evaluate technical findings according to the affected workload, available access, exposure, and possible consequences for the business.

🤝

Coverage across development and operation

We examine running environments as well as the processes used to build and deploy cloud and container resources.

⚖️

Practical remediation priorities

We provide clear actions that help development, cloud, operations, and security teams address the most important risks first.

The Business Value

A Cloud and Container Vulnerability Assessment from CA gives your organisation a clearer view of weaknesses within fast-changing technology environments.
Development and operations teams receive practical information about vulnerable components, insecure configurations, excessive permissions, and exposed resources. Findings are placed in their business context, helping the organisation concentrate on issues that could affect critical services or sensitive information.
The assessment can also improve the way cloud resources and container workloads are created. Security checks can be introduced earlier in development, reducing the likelihood that the same weaknesses appear repeatedly in production.
Better visibility and clearer ownership help organisations control cloud growth without unnecessarily slowing delivery. Technical teams can continue to use flexible and automated technologies while applying consistent security expectations.
The result is a better-protected cloud and container environment, more reliable deployment processes, and clearer priorities for security investment and improvement.

Next Step

Cloud and container environments can change faster than traditional security reviews can follow.
